The Intercept: “CEO Tim Cook Decides Apple Doesn’t Have to Pay Corporate Tax Rate because it’s ‘Unfair’”

Here’s what Apple CEO Tim Cook had to say about it in a long interview published this weekend in the Washington Post:

We’ve said at 40 percent, we’re not going to bring it back until there’s a fair rate. There’s no debate about it. Is that legal to do or not legal to do? It is legal to do. It is the current tax law. It’s not a matter of being patriotic or not patriotic. It doesn’t go that the more you pay, the more patriotic you are.

Cook simultaneously wants us to know he is not a bad “traditional CEO” who just cares about money. No, to the contrary, he feels an “incredible responsibility” to “the communities and the countries that the company operates in” and “the whole ecosystem of the company.”

Therefore, because Cook cares so little about money and so much about communities, Apple won’t be paying its taxes. That’s just fair.

Apple: corporate greed and hypocrisy at its finest. Developers and media companies selling through the App Store are required to pay a 30% cut to Apple; but paying taxes to the government just like everybody else? That’s just unfair.

The New York Times: “Relaxing Privacy Vow, WhatsApp will share some data with Facebook”

“We don’t know your birthday. We don’t know your home address”, Mr. Koum wrote in a blog post at the time. “None of that data has ever been collected and stored by WhatsApp, and we really have no plans to change that.”

Two years later, in a move that is rankling some of the company’s more than one billion users, WhatsApp will soon begin to share some member information with Facebook.

WhatsApp said on Thursday that it would start disclosing the phone numbers and analytics data of its users to Facebook. It will be the first time the messaging service has connected users’ accounts to the social network to share data, as Facebook tries to coordinate information across its collection of businesses.

Shocking! And by that I mean I’m shocked that it took this long; I’ve noticed a couple of times that Facebook suggested I should befriend people I had recently communicated with on WhatsApp, and who had no other obvious connection to me on Facebook, so I’ve long assumed they are secretly sharing data already. Then again waiting is a pretty good strategy: let WhatsApp grow and attract more users before starting to integrate their data with Facebook – the more WhatsApp grows, the bigger network effects will dissuade people from switching to alternative messaging apps.

The Verge: “Facebook 2026”

But in our discussion, Zuckerberg spoke with deep conviction about the benefits that programs like Free Basics were already bringing to the world’s poor. As I was on my way out, he stopped me to ask if he could say a bit more about why he’s spending so much of his time on connectivity projects. “The internet really does bring so many opportunities to people”, he said. “There are all these studies that show that for every 10 people that get on the internet, about one person gets lifted out of poverty, and almost one new job gets created. If you’re talking about 4 billion people who are not on the internet, spreading internet connectivity is clearly one of the biggest things we can do to improve the quality of life for so many people around the world.”

Zuckerberg added that direct investment in education and health is critical. “But I think one thing that a lot of people miss is that if you’re living in a town that doesn’t have a good school, then the internet actually is your best bet for getting a good education”, he said. “And if you’re living in a place that doesn’t have a good doctor, then the internet is your best bet for being able to look up what a condition might be.”

Interesting piece on Facebook’s plans for the future. But ten years is a very long time in this day and age, so my guess is many of these plans will either get scrapped or realized in very different ways – and possibly by companies other than Facebook. Some of Mark Zuckerberg’s comments sound overly idealistic, even naïve: the part about how efficiency and cost reduction gets past down to end customers for example. You have to keep in mind that the majority of the world’s poorest countries are not functioning democracies or free markets, so any efficiency gains are more likely to end up in the hands of the ruling class, not distributed among the poor.

In terms of the cost of data, we’re working on stuff like TIP Telecom Infra Project, making open-source software available for running telco networks — like our Open Compute project, which we’ve done internally. It saved us billions of dollars, and if we can save the telco industry billions of dollars, then in a competitive market that will be passed along to consumers in the form of lower data prices.

Bloomberg: “Tesla: Nothing Really Matters, Anyone Can See”

Tesla stock is utterly indifferent to whether the company’s losses are bigger or smaller than analysts predict. Wednesday’s miss, at 77 percent, was the biggest ever, according to figures compiled by Bloomberg -- and the stock initially traded up after hours. I looked back at the prior 24 quarters and compared the amount by which Tesla beat or missed the consensus forecast with the next day’s share price move, using data compiled by Bloomberg. The correlation coefficient was all of 0.0374 -- or, among friends, “zero”.

Liam Denning

A peculiar situation to say the least. Tesla is burning cash like a tech startup (effectively borrowing money even from future customers through deposits for the Model 3), but they manufacture physical products (cars and batteries) with a slow cycle from innovation to market and high fixed costs. At some point they are going to have to deliver on profits – or at least achieve positive cash-flow like Amazon.

Instagram Blog: “Introducing Instagram Stories”

With Instagram Stories, you don’t have to worry about overposting. Instead, you can share as much as you want throughout the day — with as much creativity as you want. You can bring your story to life in new ways with text and drawing tools. The photos and videos will disappear after 24 hours and won’t appear on your profile grid or in feed.

Another attempt from Facebook to copy the success of Snapchat – this time publicly stated in an interview by none other than Instagram’s CEO. There’s naturally been some back-and-forth among industry analysts whether this is ‘copying done right’ or ‘shameless stealing’, but for me the true question is if and how this fits into Instagram’s existing product. And the answer is not at all from my point of view.

Alastair Reynolds – Blue Remembered Earth

in Bucharest, Romania
Alastair Reynolds - Blue Remembered Earth
